§ D.01What is in it
The table holds 303,768 publishable auction records, of which 302,360 are completed sales and 1,408 are not: reserve-not-met, withdrawn or unsold. Of the completed sales, 268,417 are in US dollars and 33,943 in another currency. Only the dollar sales feed a published median, which is why the figures on this site describe the dollar market specifically.
Coverage runs from 1 January 2016 to 1 November 2026. The early years are thinner and dominated by the traditional auction houses; the online marketplaces account for most of the recent volume.
§ D.02Which auction houses
19 sources, largest first. The span shown is the range of sale dates that source covers, which is not the same as the years it has been in business: a house's records enter the table when they are collected, not when the gavel fell.

§ D.03What each record carries
A record holds the auction house, the source URL, the sale date, the outcome, the price and its currency, the make, model and model year, the listing title, and — where the auction house published them — the VIN, mileage with its unit, transmission, engine, body style, drivetrain, colours, location, whether there was a reserve, and the bid count.
Absence is meaningful here. A blank mileage is not a zero-mile car, and a missing VIN is not a car without one; it is a record where the house did not publish the field. Nothing is inferred to fill a gap, which is why a page shows a mileage column with some blanks rather than a filled one with guesses.
§ D.04What a published figure is computed from
A model page reads one slice of this table: one make, one model string or the several strings a generation is stored under, one year window, completed sales only, US dollars only, cleared for publication, and surviving the nine cleaning rules on the method page. The median, the quartiles and the full range are computed on that slice, and the page prints the count so the slice is auditable.
The same figures are served as JSON at /api/values and over MCP at /api/mcp, for anything that would rather read a number than scrape one.
§ D.05Where the dataset ends
It is auction results. Dealer forecourt sales, private sales and asking prices are not in it, and an asking price is never treated as a sale.
It is not every auction. Only houses whose results can be collected and cleared for publication are included. A model that sells mainly through a house outside that list will have a thin set here, and the page says so by printing the count rather than hiding it.
It is not a history report. There is no title, lien, accident or service history in this table, and no page on this site claims otherwise.
Currency. 33,943 completed sales (11.2% of the sold set) are in currencies other than the dollar and do not enter a published median.
§ D.06Questions
How big is the BidBetter auction dataset?
303,768 publishable records, 302,360 of them completed sales, across 1,287 makes and 10,353 models from 19 auction houses.
Can I read the numbers without the site?
Yes. /api/values returns the published figures as JSON, and /api/mcp serves the same figures over the Model Context Protocol. Both are read-only and free to call.
